Dimokreitio Panepistimio Thrakis – Greece JGC has interests in the following fields that are of great economic importance for the country in the short-term and long-term: JGC is involved in research on crops (wheat, maize, sunflower, etc.), grown in Bulgaria, in the region and other countries, by applying genomic approaches (DNA marker assisted selection, gene expression profiling, DNA sequencing, etc.) of immediate interest for breeding programs. Of particular interest are studies of local germplasms for identifying new alleles related to resistance to abiotic (eg. drought, frost) and biotic (eg disease, pests) stress. Another field of interest is the detailed characterization of natural bioactive compounds or their derivatives, for use in medicine and the food industry. This is a very important task since Bulgaria is characterized by rich biodiversity.
